What Should We Look For Before Buying Dog

6 Things to Consider Before Buying Any Dog

Size : The first thing you need to consider when choosing a puppy is size. There are two main types of dogs that exist today; large and small. Large dogs tend to weigh between 10 – 15 pounds while small ones range from 2 – 5 pounds. The smaller the dog, the less likely they will have good health and temperament.

Temperament : The second factor to consider is their temperaments. Some dogs are very friendly and outgoing while others are reserved and quiet. You want your new pup to fit into your lifestyle. So make sure they’re going to be a good companion for you!

Health & Training History : You may not realize it but many people choose a dog based on its looks alone. However, there’s nothing wrong with looking at other factors such as breed history or health records before making your decision. If you do decide to go with a particular breed. Make sure you read up on all the details of what makes them different from each other.

Grooming : You’ll want to consider how much grooming or cleaning is required for your new friend. If you don’t have the time or money to take them to a professional on a regular basis. Then maybe you should reconsider your choice.

Age & Size : The final thing you should look at is the age and size of the dog you want to adopt. Dogs generally start out as puppies and go all the way up to 10-year-old adult. Each age requires different amounts of attention, energy, and money so you’ll need to make sure you’re ready!

Where to Get One : Finally, you need to decide where you are actually going to get your new dog. If you already have a particular breed in mind then you can go get one from a shelter. Or even a friend of yours may be giving away their dog. Alternatively, you can always go to a professional dog breeder and get the “pick of the litter.”

What Homemade Dog Toys We Can Make Using Old Winter Stuff

Winter will be over soon. No more piles of snow, ridiculous temperatures and people complaining out on the streets.

However the end of old man winter leave us with a question. What to do with all those old and damaged winter clothes? Well you could donate them to a charity.( if your stuff is in good condition). or you you can keep them and save big bucks on dog toys.

Here are two toys you can make using an old beanie and a pair of winter gloves:

Make a dog chew toy using an old woolen beanie: Have an old teared woolen beanie lying around? Grab a pair of scissors, some manila hemp rope ( this natural fiber is safe for your pet and is sold at most hardware stores) and a beanie. Tie the manila rope tightly around to the base of the beanie ( where you put your head ), cut the excess rope leaving about five inches of rope on each side.

The five inches of excess rope at the end of the beanie will work great as a chew toy. Or for playing tug of war with your dog. ( your dog can also chew on the beanie part of the toy.

Homemade dog toy using an old pair of woolen gloves: This can´t get any simpler. Tie knots to join the finger part of the two gloves together and you are done. Move the tied up pair of gloves in the air to draw your dog´s attention. Now you have a chew toy your dog will play with whenever he is bored.

Please ask your vet first before giving these homemade toys to your dog. Inspect your dog toys regularly and don´t forget to use only wool and manila hemp. Fun does not get any cheaper than this !!

How To Choose The Right Vet For Your Dog’s Health?

If you own pets, obviously their health is a priority to you. For this reason, it is essential to choose a veterinarian with care. Just as you would take your time to locate a suitable doctor for your own health needs. You should do the same when searching for someone to offer medical care to your furry friends.

Choosing someone who shares your passion about pet care is a good first step. Similar to doctors who treat humans, there are always vets who are more passionate about their job than others. It is essential to choose such a professional for your animals. If they truly care for the pets they treat. They are much more apt to make decisions based on what is best for the animal. As opposed to what is best for their wallet.

Perhaps one of the most effective ways to find an appropriate veterinarian is to ask friends and coworkers for word-of-mouth referrals. Although most animal hospitals and vets run ads on a regular basis. Such information is certainly not what one would call unbiased. What you need to look for is the opinions of people who have had experience with particular practitioners. And for this reason can tell you exactly what to expect.

Obtaining personal referrals is also an ideal way to find out who to avoid. If a person had a negative experience with a veterinarian. Who was distracted indifferent. Or made the wrong medical decision that individual should be avoided at all costs. Never make an appointment for your pet before you visit the facility. Always go to the office ahead of time to inspect the premises.

If the waiting room is overcrowded dirty, or the staff appear rude. Or overwhelmed with their work load that establishment is not the best choice for you or your pet. Visit several offices in your local area and compare the overall atmosphere and how well they appear to be run. When you do this, the best facility will almost certainly eclipse the others by comparison.

Always choose a clinic that allows you to see the same veterinarian at each visit. Just as it is important for you to establish a rapport with your family physician. It is also essential for your pets to form a relationship with their healthcare provider. It is also wise to check and see if the veterinarian. You are considering is associated with any other professional organizations or establishments.

These may include animal rescue organizations, kennel services, and grooming facilities. You should also ask about the veterinarian’s approach to health maintenance. This is because it is important to have a vet who not only treats your dog when he or she becomes ill. But also one who will offer tips about how you can keep your pets healthy on a regular basis.

Finally, reading reviews online is an excellent way to determine whether or not a particular veterinarian has a good or bad reputation. Although no practitioner is perfect, a history of complaints is always a bad sign. Ultimately, when you choose the best veterinarian for your pet, you are ensuring that he or she will enjoy good health whenever possible.

How To Make A Pet Gate?

Do you have visitors often in your home? Are you worried your dog might run away if anybody leaves the door open? Want to separate your pets during meals to avoid fights?

If so, you need a pet gate. There are many choices out there, wooden, metal, freestanding, pressure mounted, and so on. Here is an easy way to make a wooden free standing pet gate:

  1. Measure your doorway: Get a measuring tape and take measures of the height and width of the space where you intend to place your pet gate.
  2. Get some lumber: If you don´t want to spend much, I recommend you get one or two wooden pallets, they are usually made of pine wood ( but please make sure the wood has NOT been treated with harmful chemicals, that will only hurt your pet. Ask your vet before using any type of wood and any other materials. )
  3. Gather your stuff: You will need a work bench, a hammer, wood, a saw, carpenter´s glue, wood nails, safety goggles, gloves, and a folding carpenter´s ruler.
  4. After you have taken your measurements, use the saw to cut wood into six equal pieces ( mine were 55 cms long, you can cut more than six pieces if your doorway is wider).
  5. Then cut two longer pieces of lumber ( mine were 80 cms long to fill the space of my doorway´s width). Later cut two 40 cms long pieces of wood to make the base.
  6. Finally put the six shorter pieces of lumber on top of the two longer pieces and start hammering nails ( I used 4 nails per lumber).
  7. The base is a bit trickier, you can either hammer nails sideways, or use carpenter´s glue to place the two 40 cms between the bottom gaps of the wooden gate. Don´t forget to cut and/or sand the pointy ends of the nails, if any part of them comes out the other end of the wood.

Please remember, if your pet gate is not secure and sturdy, you should NEVER use it to keep your pet from leaving/entering a room. In other words if you could not made a safe and strong enough pet gate, BUY one at your local pet store ( always consider the size, and age of your dog before buying a pet gate. Ask your vet which pet gate is right for your dog). Safety first ( especially if it means protecting your beloved pet) !!

Why Labradors Are So Pawsome ?

I love all animals since I can remember, dogs in particular and those crazy labbies . Maybe I´m biased because I have shared my life with Labradors for over a decade. I don´t know how to even start describing Labradors ( and all dogs for that matter) so I made a list and hopefully I make them justice:

  • You had an awful day and then come home hating your life? Who can be depressed ( or angry for long) when a goofy, lovable Labrador waits for you at the door with tail wags or a chew toy in their snout?
  • Who can hate their life if you lay down to and a loving dog puts his paw next to you? What about those face licks they give us?

Want a friendly pet? Adopt a Labrador

There no words that can describe how much these dogs love everybody. You might be old, young, a family member, a complete stranger or even a scary dog that growls at everyone. For labbies you are a friend, and if they don´t know, you can tell they are happy to meet you. Perhaps they are too friendly ( I know I had to walk away from an angry dog more times than I can remember because my labbie wished to say hello).

Wanna play, camp, hike, or do some exercise ?

Labs are full of energy and love to please their family, but please remember to do your activities within a safe environment ( and use a leash, have your pet microchipped, etc) and you will find that nothing beats a Labbie.

Don´t want to leave your house?

No problem! Labs are great companions inside the house also. Throw a ball or a chew toy and you will have tons of fun. Maybe I did not even begin to do Labbies justice with this post, but I sure hope you give Labs ( and all dogs) a chance visit an animal shelter or rescue and adopt /foster those loving doggies. WTH? Oh well I´ll keep saving animals!!

You might recall how I wrote suggestions on what to do when that awful date arrived. Well that date is here and guess what, those ancient prophecies from the Mayans, Hopi and others were a hoax. Nothing has happened so far!! I guess this is something good, I mean who would like the 4th world to end and the 5th to begin just to watch destruction all around us? Not me for sure !! I was a little bit scared about this December 21st date.

At this point you might be thinking this guy is such a nut that a squirrel should be chasing him !! And who could blame you, I guess I´m nuts. Anyway if nothing at all happens in the immediate future, below is a Hindu legend I find fascinating, one that sure inspires me to keep on saving animals ( and should inspire you as well) :

When a human dies there is a bridge they must cross to enter into Heaven. At the head of the bridge waits every animal that human encountered during their lifetime. The animals, based on what they know of this person, decide which humans may cross the bridge…and which are turned away.

Little Brown: A dog filled with hope Being a volunteer at my local No Kill Animal Shelter is not easy, shelter employees and volunteers do a great job but sadness is all around. Every time I visit the shelter I´m received with kisses and tail wags from all types of dogs.

However there are also those that are just tired of living inside a shelter every single day. You can find them lying on the floor , crawling into a corner as if looking for somebody that will give them a loving home. As I go inside each kennel to clean up and fill their bowls, I try to pet all of those sad dogs and sometimes I get licked, or receive a tail wag.

Sometimes I feel like they will never get adopted, because it is not easy to find homes quickly for all of them. And then when I get so depressed that I begin to pray for those innocent dogs, there she is: Little Brown. She is a small two tone brown mutt, that follows me everywhere I go. Sometimes I think she is a ghost, but other times I believe she was sent straight from heaven to remind me one thing: Don´t lose hope.

Hope is all a shelter dog has, hope that a family will come a long and adopt or foster them. There are other dogs that just hope the same person who surrendered them to the shelter, will see their mistakes and pick them up to give them a ride back home.

Little Brown has a permanent smile on her face and calls my attention every time she sees me. She does not care that all her puppies were adopted and she was not, she has a good heart filled with faith and hope.

Please consider pet adoption/foster or rescue. If you think you can´t keep your dogs give them to an animal loving family member or friend. Please never surrender your pooch, they deserve a chance to live a happy life and in return they will give you tons of love.

Why you should volunteer at your local No Kill Animal Shelter ?

if you are an animal lover like me, I bet you have a dog ( or more) and I bet you pamper your pets in any way you can.

I´m sure they have toys, a warm bed, treats, and they enjoy walks in the park. Your dog loves living inside your home, and goes regularly to the vet. So what I´m trying to get at? Well it is pretty simple, your dog is loved and well taken care of and most importantly he has a loving family to call his own.

Well at the No Kill Animal Shelter I volunteer at not all of the above comforts are available. Here is a list:

  • Beds : Try cardboard or old newspapers on top of the cement floor.
  • Toys : Yeah right, there is no budget for that. Try dogs playing with small branches that fall from a tree ocassionally.
  • Treats : From time to time the shelter gets donations of bread from local hotels and supermarkets and volunteers and shelter employees go around each kennel giving bread pieces to each dog.
  • Food and water : Yes! These are available every single day, thanks to donations and the efforts of the shelter´s manager.
  • Vet visits : Absolutely! All dogs are well taken care of by a few local vets that either volunteer or charge a small fee.

So where am I´m getting at with the above list and all this article?

It is quite simple, no matter how much care dogs get a our No Kill Shelter, there is one big thing missing: love. Sure volunteers and shelter employees alike pet them all the time, but I can´t help to notice that they could be a lot better living with a loving family.

Let me just give you one example before I finish: I´m in charge of cleaning kennels every Saturday afternoon. I use a shovel to pick up the poop and put it in a garbage can. After I´m done with that I hose the remaining stuff through the gutters (the janitor does a more thorough cleaning the other days). Anyway after I´m finished cleaning, I start filling up bowls with clean water one kennel at a time(if you were wondering, yes they get dog food twice a day).

Each time I visit a kennel, I see the same sad situation over and over: Dogs of all kinds lying on the floor with the most heartbreaking look on their eyes. Some of them come lick my face when I put water in their bowls, others just look the other way as if asking themselves where is my family?

So to wrap things up I guess, I´m plainly begging you to please don´t buy a dog ( or any other pet), if you buy a pet you will only support puppy mills. Please go to an animal shelter/pound and adopt/foster one of the many sad and lonely animals out there.

How to survive with your dog?

I may be crazy, I may be nuts but I´ve been preparing for this December 21st 2016 date for years. I have read every possible theory I could find out there. I´ve been paying attention to every single prophecy I encountered. No matter if its Mayan, Hopi, etc you name them. I have read them all. I have also watched every single documentary that included expert analysis.

Granted that does not mean something will take place on that date, but I believe in being prepared. So here is my list of suggestions for those of you that want to survive and take Fido with you:

  1. Buy a tent: Yes, camping gear may sound like a joke, but remember the world is supposed to sink into chaos so you should be ready.
  2. Get survival gear for your dog: I know you can´t picture a post apocalyptic world without your pooch so get this pronto.
  3. Keep your dog on a leash: Dogs get easily scared by high pitch noises, and any strong sounds. Don´t forget that they have a much developed hearing sense than us humans. Get one of these and put it in the ground firmly, then attach your dog´s leash. If you are like me and think a tie out is too drastic, you can also use a crate like the Firstrax Port A Crate E2 Indoor/Outdoor Pet Home.
  4. Stock on water, dry food and don´t forget to pack light:There is no point of going into safety with heavy equipment, so use you best judgement and never abandon you dog.
  5. Purchase an outdoor survival guide :P.S: I´m not an alarmist just a person who firmly believes in being prepared. Hope these tips helped.

How To Cure Depression In Dogs?

Is your dog sad most of the time? Does he no longer enjoy the things he used to like? If he no longer wants to go out on walks, ride on your car, play with toys, etc, then he might have depression.

Animal experts believe that depression in dogs is triggered by many things like: moving into a new house, bringing in a new born baby, adopting a new dog, having an owner that is depressed also, and probably the biggest of them all, not spending enough time with your dog.

Our lives are full of difficult stuff we must solve and sometimes we forget about our furry friends, the ones that love us no matter what.

How To Help Dog To Get Rid Of Depression ?

Here is a list of things you should try:

  1. Spend more time with your dog: Please remember that our dogs are living sentient beings and they can feel everything in their surroundings. If you are having problems and feeling sad, angry, etc, he will definitely sense that. Please try to control your emotions when you are around your dog, be nice and gentle to him, be patient, pet him and cuddle with your dog.
  2. Dog toys : Give him his favorite toys and play with him, remember dogs like toys but they love spending time with their family, this means YOU.
  3. Walks : If your dog feels like going out, try to go his favorite dog park, call a neighbour that has a friendly dog and visit them, etc.
  4. Car rides: Try to visit the places your dog loves (even if it´s just around your neighborhood), and let take his head out the window!

If nothing works please take your dog to a vet you trust, and you can also visit an animal behaviorist.

* Don´t forget to put a seat belt on your dog, always have your dog on a leash, and carry bags to pick up his poop.

Labrador Dog Training Tips?

Dogs are truly man’s best friend and this can be seen in the number of people worldwide who keep dogs as their pets. Most of them enjoy the dog’s company while others keep them for security reasons. Whichever the case they are very effective in doing both duties. This is further aided by the fact that some of these dogs have strong senses of smell.

Labrador dogs are amongst the most kept dogs in people’s homes globally. This has a lot to do with the fact that they are very friendly and loving, fun and exciting to be with. This character trait in them can make them poor watchdogs because of the fact that they’ll still be friendly with strangers.

If you are the new owner of a Labrador puppy it can be a tough job training them but your work can be made easier with the use of Labrador dog training tips. These tips are especially for helping you train your puppy for it to grow up with proper manners. Labrador dog training will require you to have patience and commitment because the little tikes can be too exciting.

One Labrador dog training tip is to let your puppy roam free and become accustomed to its new surroundings, this is assuming it is its first day at its new home. During this time keep a wary eye on him but let him sniff out places and explore. An important thing to remember though is not to overwhelm your puppy by introducing him to new people at once. Take it slowly as he might be frightened.

Labrador dog training will also require you to teach your puppy where to do its business. Most puppies assume everywhere is their disposal point and hence they can make a mess of things. The most ideal way of applying Labrador dog training would be to carry your puppy outside each time it relieves itself. Eventually he will learn to understand that he should do his business outside.

If you want to make the most of your Labrador dog training sessions it would be advisable for you to make them short. This is because your puppy is likely to have a very short attention span. Print Media . Also as you apply these Labrador dog training tips it would do both you and your puppy well for you to reward your dog each time it does something right. Labradors love praise and if you shower them with it, they are likely to want to continue doing the right thing.

Labrador dog training will also need you to have play time for your puppy. Getting bored is something they can easily do and they love playing Frisbee and catching balls. Use this as a time to bond with your dog and have it exercise if it’s been cooped up in the house for too long.

It is important for you to learn that when you practice Labrador dog training tips to never shout at your dog. This can only make them fear you and you are likely to hurt them as they are very loving animals.

Surrendered Dogs: Saddest stories at the No Kill Shelter

If you ask me there are so many sad stories at the No Kill Shelter I volunteer at, I would not know where to begin. But maybe the saddest of them all are those of owner surrendered dogs. People come with all type of excuses to leave their Dogs behind. Stuff like : a) I´m moving, b) I´m having a baby, c) I´ve lost my job, etc.

But maybe the dumbest thing people do, is tie up their once beloved best friend to a pole near the No Kill Shelter. Volunteers had to rescue dogs from choking on their own leashes more than once.

Why Should You Not Surrender Your Dog And If You Do Surrender Must Check Him ?

Here goes: Your former best friend that once had a warm bed and a house for himself, no longer has that. When you first left your once happy dog was greeted by a multitude of other dogs, most of them friendly but some definitely not.

Your former pooch went inside his kennel shivering as he curled into a corner. Sure he gets meals twice a day and has plenty of fresh clean water, and you bet the shelter provides regular vet visits. But that once happy dog is no longer happy and certainly seems to have his spirit broken.

As a volunteer I personally clean every single kennel. I´m also the one that fills water bowls every Saturday afternoon. There is one particular dog that breaks my heart. None of the employees and volunteers know his name. All they know is that his human left him at our No Kill Shelter about two years ago.

He is a Siberian Husky mix that somehow lost his right eye, before being surrendered to our No Kill shelter. This innocent pup lies on the floor of his dog house inside his kennel and gets up only to drink water or eat his food.

The rest of the time he looks into the the distance as if wondering: Why did my ¨human¨ left me here? What did I do that was so wrong? I pet him every Saturday afternoon, but he barely looks at me. He just lies on the floor and breathes deeply.

Sometimes when I finish work at the No Kill Shelter I pray that those innocent animals get adopted. And I also tweet like crazy hoping that somebody out there will donate or find a place in his heart to take one of our dogs into their loving forever homes.

I get so angry at times, and I often ask myself: Do humans really deserve to be the dominant species of this planet? If you ask me, we don´t. Humans don´t care enough about dogs and other animals.

Humans can´t understand what unconditional love really means. I guess what I´m getting at is that

There is NO excuse to surrender/abandon you dog.

If you are moving, having a baby, are out of cash, etc, there is NO reason to dump your dog at a shelter, even if it is a No Kill Shelter.

If you think you can´t take care of your dog anymore, please give him to an animal loving family member or friend.

As I have said before, I was blessed with a difficult puppy and the best part of it all was that Dad did not even have a choice in the matter. All that I was asked to do was to agree to buy the puppy and then obviously Dad had to pay for it as well.

Unfortunately for me that was the easy part as it only later became apparent that I would have to start digging for info on how to handle this little brad. Threw many a late night on the net, I found a considerable amount of helpful info that I would like to share with anyone who is in the same unfortunate position than I was.

How To Train Your Dogs With Best Guidance ?

  1. Learn the importance of establishing a regular schedule for eating and bathroom breaks. They learn this and it makes them feel secure knowing what to expect.
  2. How to communicate with your dog in a humane way that he understands. Remember your puppy does not understand the human laungue’s and it must first try and understand what it is you want him to do.
  3. Training sessions should not be longer than ten minutes at a time and repeated three to four times a day.
  4. Take your puppy to see different places, meet different people and dogs. Socializing is really important as it will learn your pup not to be afraid or shy of things when he grows up.
  5. Another tip that will facilitate easier puppy training is to give the dog toys that are similar to household items he or she likes to chew. If the puppy is keen on shoes, purchasing a rubber toy similar to a shoe sole might be helpful.

How To Groom Your Labrador ?

Did you know that Labs do not need to be bathed frequently? In general, Labrador coats are low-maintenance! The reason for this is that if you wash your Lab to much it will take away the natural oils it produces that gives them that water resistant coat.

I would rather suggest that you brush your lab on a regular basis (about once a week) to keep them clean. A “slicker” type brush, which you can buy at any pet store, works nicely.

What You Should Feed Your Labrador When Training ?

  1. Find out why dog food will have the single largest impact on the health of your Labrador!

Labradors are prone to mild skin allergies in some regions of the US, notably Southern California. Ear infections are always a potential problem with hanging ears. You can minimize the potential for health problems by choosing the breeder of your puppy carefully.
